Ethereum's Layer 2 ecosystem has reached a significant milestone, with combined networks processing over 500 transactions per second (TPS). This achievement marks a 10x improvement from just one year ago.

Leading the charge are networks like Arbitrum, Optimism, and Base, which together account for over 80% of L2 transaction volume. The growth has been driven by increased DeFi activity, NFT trading, and the migration of applications seeking lower fees.

Average transaction costs on L2 networks have dropped to under $0.10, compared to $2-5 on Ethereum mainnet during peak times. This cost reduction has opened up new use cases previously uneconomical on the base layer.

"Layer 2 scaling is working exactly as intended," said Vitalik Buterin in a recent interview. "We're seeing the Ethereum ecosystem scale while maintaining decentralization and security."

Total value locked (TVL) across Ethereum L2s has surpassed $40 billion, representing roughly 15% of Ethereum's total DeFi TVL.
